Btw They aren’t dead, just in a kind of hibernation state called brumation. Slowed breathing and heart rate or no breathing at all. They can do that for months in the ice.

I’m guessing this was a very early freeze. Turtles dig into the mud for the winter

Fun Fact: during brumation, turtles absorb oxygen from the water using blood vessels in the cloaca.
This is exactly how I leave my turtles when I go on vacation.

Imagine falling through ice into Snapping Turtle Pond. And all the snappers are extra pissed because they were napping before you came crashing through their roof.

I was once skating on ice that clear and I saw something move under the ice so I looped around and it was a turtle swimming. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen, mainly bc I had never imagined that turtles did anything but burrow into mud come winter.

Basically, they breathe through their butts.
Alligators do this too,

I doubt that ice reaches the turtles
Is there a chance it could be alive?
